Mocke, McGregor team up for Breede

2008-08-28 00:00

Cape Town - Hank McGregor has teamed up with Dawid Mocke for the two-day Canon Breede River Canoe Marathon on September 6 and 7 in a hitherto untested combination of two former double champions.

The duo have never raced a river race together, but after their recent victory in the tough 56-km Scottburgh to Brighton surf ski race, McGregor asked Mocke if he would be willing to continue the partnership for the Breede, which this year hosts the SA K2 River Championships.

McGregor has been in sublime form this year, winning the Durban Surf Ski World Cup 10 days before his fifth victory in the Isuzu Berg, followed by a successful defence of his Tracker Highlands Challenge.

Mocke is not fazed by the fact that they have not trained together for the race.

"We managed to win the Scottburgh to Brighton without ever training together," said Mocke, who spent much of August in Beijing supporting his wife Niki, who was competing in the Olympics.

"Hank is such a laid back kind of guy and we really get on well, which is important in any combination."

In their recent victory in the Scottburgh to Brighton surf ski race, which earned them the SA double ski title, McGregor was happy to let Mocke sit in the front cockpit and steer the ski.

However, they have agreed to reverse that arrangement for the Breede.

The Breede River Canoe Marathon gets under way outside Robertson on Saturday, September 6, and ends outside Swellendam the next day.
