Model yacht pond: petition handed over

2011-08-10 00:00

MEMBERS of the radio and model boat sailing community handed over a petition with 652 signatures to the eThekwini Municipality, urging that the model yacht pond should be retained.

Eighty-two members of the public converged at Blue Lagoon Park to have their say on the social impact assessment commissioned by eThekwini Municipality regarding the proposed filling of the model yacht pond.

The municipality confirmed that objections have been noted and further submissions will be considered.

Mike Andrews, deputy head at the strategic projects unit, said, “It was good to hear the opinions of the concerned model yacht community, and as a municipality we remain committed to ensuring that Blue Lagoon Park is developed for the maximum public benefit.”

Independent social impact assessment practitioner Dr Neville Bews said recommendations will be made about whether filling in the model yacht pond is likely to have significant positive or negative social effects.

The cut-off date for submission of comments for the social impact assessment is August 17. Questionnaire forms can be obtained from Dr Neville Bews at
