Models wow the crowd with high fashion in City Hall

2014-12-13 00:00

THE fashionable crowd showed up in their finest to see if the designers could deliver the goods, and they were not disappointed.

With the Pietermaritzburg City Hall transformed into a catwalk not unlike those at the world’s leading fashion shows, the KZN Fashion Council put its best foot forward to showcase the designs of the province’s exciting new designers.

Thirteen designers got the opportunity to show off their designs, which included Western and African influences.

It was the first time the Fashion Council hosted such an event in Pietermaritzburg. The evening consisted of two shows, the first by five designers who had completed their “21 Steps to Retail” programme. This was a six-month mentorship programme for the young designers. All five designers were awarded certificates on completion.

The second show had eight talented designers who participated in the SA Fashion Week, showcasing their October classy collections. Among them was the likes of Estcourt’s own Thembeka Vilkazi from Yadah Exclusive Designs, who wrapped up the show with her unique collection inspired by democracy and the Zulu culture.

Vilakazi, who has participated three times at SA Fashion Week and has been seen every year at Vodacom Durban July with her own models, said she enjoyed working with young designers and mentoring models under her label. “My dream is to open a fashion boutique for both men and women,” she said.

Other collections included Brenda Waring for Whatevs Designs with a romantic feel mixed with a touch of sexiness and vintage, while Matte Nolim’s range was inspired by technology.

Councillor Mary Schalkwyk in her speech said designers should also consider opening a range for fully figured women, not only the model type. She also thanked the KZNFC for opening doors for local designers by giving them training and mentorship for retail.

Fashion designer labels for the “21 Step programme to retail” for show one included:

• Khanyisile, Durban SA

• STAPLES by Lungile Mbanjwa

• Arabella Couture

• Soul Sech Desire Fashions

• Endless Inspirations

SA Fashion Week collection designers included:
