2013-02-06 00:00

BENEDICT Moeng was the clear victor of the weekend’s 2013 SA Marathon Championships in 2:17:32 with Lucky Mohale his closest challenger just over 600 metres adrift and Coolboy Ngamole completing the podium places in 2:21:39.

The KZN women dominated their race, placing four runners in the top 10. Central Gauteng’s Cornelia Joubert led the women home in a relatively fast 2:46:13, with Kim Laxton just over a minute behind, and Richards Bay-based Melanie van Rooyen taking bronze in 2:48:35.

Van Rooyen was backed up by Pietermaritzburg’s Suzette Botha (2:49:38) in fourth, Kerry Koen (2:55:14) in sixth and Debbie Perry 10th for KZN to earn the team gold.

With the majority of the KZN team also competing in age group categories, there were a number of medals brought back from Oudtshoorn.

Botha set a new provincial age group record in winning gold in the 40-44 category, while Koen was second in the 35-39, Toti’s Lien Botha second in the 65-69 age group.

The men were equally successful with Petros Sosibo and Richard Dlamini scoring the gold and bronze in the 40-44, Eloi de Olivera taking silver behind Valdimer Kotov, who ran an impressive 2:34 in the 50-54 age group. Stella’s Roger Bailey added a further silver with his 3:42:18 in the 70 plus age group, while Peter Sehloho and Shaun Meiklejohn finished in 2:48:43 and 2:50:06 respectively in the 50-54 age group.

Locally, Vusi Mnyandu took the honours over the new single lap Sparkport 32 km course and just failed to break the two-hour barrier.

Chatsworth’s Garikai Maqaw was little over 70 metres adrift with Phuma’s Sipho Ngxango a more distant third in 2:03:00.

Daisy Kigetich beat Bluff’s Yolanda Fisher and Fikile Mbuthuma to the tape in the women’s race. Kigetich was given a time of two hours 23 minutes for the distance, while Jenna Challenor took the 16 km event ahead of club colleague Janine Carey, with Maureen Slack third.

Samual Pazanga and Malvern Paradza gave the Maxed elite club, which is the new name for Mr Price Sports runners, top two in the 16 km and the double victory overall.

The DB Enterprises 10 km will be held in Ladysmith on Saturday (10 am) from Fifty Park Sports Ground. Details at 084 6401 213.

The major event of the weekend is Sunday’s NOSA Hillcrest Marathon, which is a pre-entry race only.
