Mohlale and Maxwell scoop Summer Holiday run

2009-12-18 00:00

VISITOR Lucky Mohale won Wednesday’s 23 km KwaZulu Weavers Summer Holiday in devastating fashion, opening almost two kilometres over local athlete Sazi Ndaba to cross the line in 1 hour 12 minutes 57 seconds.

This was the final KwaZulu-Natal race of 2009.

The Gauteng Strider was never endangered in his journey from the Bergville Primary School through to Winterton Country Club. After an initial tussle with Boxer’s Sibonela Duma, Ndaba pulled away to finish in 1hr 18min 18sec, with Duma recording 1:19:36.

Tanith Maxwell wound up her preparations for her trip to China with her now traditional win in the Summer Holiday 23 km. As with Mohale, Maxwell was a gun-to-tape winner, taking 1:31:15 for the undulating course.

Run Walk for Life’s Sonja Boyd was a distant second, but well clear of Collegians Harriers’ Sarah Scott, who closed the podium in 1:47:10.

The cancellation of Sunday’s DAC Calder Cup and Sulin Trophy 10 km means that the next race in the province will be on January 10 in the traditional Ronnie Davel 16 km run around the Mondi Forest outside Hilton.

The race starts at Laddsworth Primary School. Sally Upfold has more details at 082 570 0851.

Clubs and athletes are reminded that the KZN office has extended its hours in order to help with the distribution of licence numbers.

It will now close this afternoon and will only reopen on Wednesday, January 6.
