Mollen, Maxwell win Verulam

2011-03-08 00:00

PROFESSOR Mollen won the tough 27 km Verulam Checkout Challenge to the north of Durban on Sunday in a time of one hour 28 minutes and 14 seconds.

The Zimbabwean opened a lead of almost 300 m with his Mr Price club-mate Herbert Cholkera.

Cholkera hung on gamely on the steep downhill return to cross the line in 1:29:07 with Senzo Miya, now running in the colours of Bonitas, a distant third over four minutes later.

South Africa’s leading marathon runner, Tanith Maxwell, has a date in London next month and used the hilly course as part of her build-up towards the marathon.

Rhythmically knocking out a pace of four minutes per kilometre, the Boxer athlete was in a class of her own, taking the tape in one hour 48 minutes 48 seconds.

Iris Ndlovu was a very distant second place on Sunday taking two hours one minute and 50 seconds to secure her spot ahead of Janine Engels, who was only 17 seconds adrift and closing in 2:02:07.

Richard Nene added victory in the 15km for the Mr Price club.

Nontokozo Mhkize of Eskom Gijimas won the women’s race in one hour one minute and 52 seconds.
