A TODDLER had a miraculous escape when his mother was struck by a train at Snathing in Pietermaritzburg yesterday afternoon. The woman died at the scene, but the child escaped unharmed.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Vincent Mdunge said the 30-year-old woman and her two-year-old son were walking along the railway line when the woman was struck by the train. She sustained open a wound to the head.

“While investigations are ongoing, the child has been taken to a place of safety and will be kept there until his next of kin has been notified. He is very shaken up and distraught,” said Mdunge.

He was unable to release the identity of the mother and child.
