Monarch, premier launch KZN cultural festival

Durban will, in March, host the inaugural provincial youth cultural festival.

Yesterday a launch of the event, which organisers say promises to be a success, was held at the Pietermaritzburg’s Royal Showgrounds.

Premier Sbu Ndebele and Zulu monarch Goodwill Zwelithini were among the guests who attended the launch.

The project is the brainchild of the provincial youth commission and the premier’s office, and is to be piloted in five districts before the main event.

Ndebele said the carnival will be one of many events to celebrate the cultural heritage of the people of the province.

Other events in this year’s calendar, Ndebele said, include the commemoration of King Dinuzulu, which will include the unveiling of a statue in Durban. “[W]e will also start building a R22-million multimedia centre near Ulundi. This centre will tell the story of the people of KwaZulu-Natal,” he said.

King Zwelithini welcomed the news of the carnival, saying it will go a long way towards reviving culture.

Nhlakanipho Ntombela, the provincial chair of the youth commission, said while the carnival is a showcase of talent, it will also be a tool to spread messages on HIV/Aids, alcohol and drug abuse and teenage pregnancies.
