Monday Morning Survival Guide

2010-11-29 00:00

FOUNDER of the Durban School of Comedy (DSOC), stand-up comedian Glen Bo began his journey in Johannesburg.

“I then moved to London to become a pro and, in my five years there, I did various festivals such as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the London Fringe.”

Bo and Cape Town-based standup comedian Martin Evans are the only two South African comics to live and work in the UK scene for more than four years.

He debuts as an actor in the South African film Florida Road which is to be realised in 2011.

“I had a whole four lines!”

During the Splashy Fen 2011 music festival, Bo will be releasing his own DVD Sorry, What?! and can be found at the I Heart Durban Comedy Festival this December.

“My comedy is largely influenced by Dylan Moran, Bill Hicks, Eddie Izzard, David Mitchel, alternative music, squirrels and midgets.”

Hmm ... we put his funny to the test.

What is your Monday-morning survival guide?

I start up my laptop and watch 30 minutes of the Peep Show. It’s a comedy from the UK. It’s genius. I also check my Facebook page and look out at the ocean from my place.

Ways to fight the flu?

With the Force and speaking to it like Lord Voldemort.

Men and speedos are like …

bananas in pyjamas.

Any childhood moments that sparked the person you are today?

I won a fight by outwitting a guy. He didn’t know what onomatopoeia was. I did. I also then kicked him to demonstrate the principle.

Caught at a road block and your breath could get you in trouble. What’s your best excuse?

I have cancer and I’m on my way to go swim with the Sharks’ Flasher Girls.

What do you do when you are caught in a two-hour traffic jam?

Use my time machine to travel forward in time and then, by the Hawking’s paradox of time travel, shoot myself.

What’s life to you?

“Don’t beat a character be one,” — F. Botha.

Most useless advice ever given to you?

You never told jokes in school? Maybe stick to the engineering.

What can you do with your moulding collection of video cassettes?

I used all the video tapes to build a raft when I was captured by Somalian pirates. Yes, the irony of being sold by pirates after being captured on a raft made of video tapes is too much.

The strangest thing about humanity is …

it’s ability to destroy itself consciously.

How do you think the world will end?

With the sun exploding. This creates a supernova. Fact.

Most annoying thing

People who update their Facebook status with relationship updates.

Stereotypes that you hate?

Comedians who are not in fact comedians and have fan pages. Although that’s more like a pet peeve.

What’s the funniest line that you have watched?

Black Books (a British sitcom):

Moo-Pa: Shop’s still called Black Books, I see?

Bernard: Yeah. I was gonna call it World of Tights, but you know how stupid people are.

Once you pop …

the centrifugal force is released and you become a balloon animal.

Being a comedian is like ...

being the world’s commentator, executioner and jester simultaneously.
