Monster re-sentenced

2010-04-26 00:00

INEXPLICABLY freed from custody, Sibusiso Sithole (34) of Sobantu became a predatory monster. Pretending to be kindly, he lured young women into situations in which he raped, assaulted and robbed them.

His crimes during 2007 in Pietermaritzburg earned him two life sentences plus 58 years’ jail on Friday. All sentences run concurrently with a life term. His non-parole period is 25 years.

Without any show of remorse Sithole sat in the high court in Pietermaritzburg with arms folded, glowering at Judge Kate Pillay, lawyers and spectators during sentencing.

Pillay said the sad reality is that such crimes are increasing; South Africa is plunging into a morass of crime.

Pillay quoted excerpts from other high court judgments: “country ravaged by criminal conduct … contagion of lawlessness … criminal proclivities must be stamped out”.

Sithole was sentenced to 15 years for raping a 17-year-old. He forced her to have oral sex, for which he got 10 years, and five years for trying to rob her.

He got 15 years for raping an adult woman and 10 years for forcing her to commit oral sex.

Pillay imposed life for raping a woman after he had kicked and hit her with his fist and robbed her with aggravation. He got three years for the assault.

He was sentenced to life for three rapes, which included forcing a 17-year-old to have oral sex. The three rapes were taken as one for sentencing.
