Moo-ving: Trapped calf rescued

2012-12-06 00:00

A CONCERTED effort from city authorities yesterday resulted in a four-month-old calf being reunited with its mother after it spent more than 24 hours stuck in a drain in Dambuza.

Paulos Ngxabi, a fieldworker for the SPCA, told The Witness that the calf had become stuck in the drain on Tuesday afternoon.

“The owner and the community tried to call us then, but they could not get through.

“I got there yesterday and found the calf inside the drain,” said Ngxabi.

“We called the fire department. When they arrived, they saw that they could not get it out, so they called the city engineers, who arrived with a grader and dug a hole. The pipe was taken out, and the calf freed,” he said.

The calf immediately went to its mother and started suckling.

SPCA spokesperson Maureen Vida said they were grateful to the fire department and the municipality for rescuing the calf. “There’s a happy ending because the calf is now back with its mother,” said Vida.
