Mooi River activist ‘shot for incitement’

2009-11-04 00:00

TENSIONS in Mooi River are at an all-time high following violent acts of intimidation against individuals involved in organising service delivery protest marches.

Members of the Phumlasi Development Committee (PDC) told The Witness they are being attacked for mobilising residents to take a stand against poor governance in the Mpofana Municipality.

The latest incident involves the shooting of PDC chairman Bheki Dlamini.

Dlamini said he was shot in the foot almost two weeks ago by a close associate of some councillors for inciting the protests.

He spent a week in Northdale Hospital, he said, and although he has reported the matter to the police, the perpetrator is still roaming the streets.

“I went to the police station to ask why they haven’t arrested him and they told me they were still going to phone him.

“They didn’t even give me a case number,” said Dlamini.

He said this attack was not an isolated occurence, as, in August, one of their members had been stabbed during a protest march.
