Mooi River municipality set to be dissolved

2014-09-16 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Parliament will today give the green light for the Mooi Mpofana (Mooi River) Municipality to be dissolved.

The KZN council will end alongside that of the Ngaka Modira Molema District Municipality (Coligny Groot-Marico) in the North West.

The MECs for Co-operative Governance of the two provinces yesterday tabled proposals for planned interventions to the ad hoc committee.

KZN’s MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube said the situation in Mooi Mpofana has long been described as life threatening, with councillors and municipal officers among the instigators of service delivery protests which they actually have to deliver. The municipality’s problems had started in 2012 with violent community protests and in the 2012/’13 its R102 million budget showed more than R26 million had been irregularly spent.

DA MP Mergan Chetty welcomed the decision, but said it was one death too late, adding taxpayers will now have to foot the bill for new elections.

He asked why these two municipalities were being singled out when there were others with similar problems. He said the ANC should just get rid of incompetent cadres and not dissolve the whole council. “It smells of politics,” Chetty said.

ANC MP Lewis Nzimande said there was no politics involved, but a decision was taken in the best interests of the voters.
