Mooi River rapist gets 25 years

2011-08-04 00:00

MBEKEZELI Lucky Mazibuko (23) of Nottingham Road was sentenced to an effective 25 years’ imprisonment yesterday for the rape, robbery and kidnapping of a 34-year-old woman whom he abducted from her home at knife-point on December 19, 2010.

The state accepted Mazibuko’s plea of guilty to the three charges and withdrew four additional rape charges and a charge of attempted murder against him arising from the attack.

The court was told that her experience had caused the victim to change her lifestyle. She is now fearful of coming home at dusk or after dark.

“While her physical injuries may have healed the mental scars and blemishes … are likely to be with her for a long time,” Judge Anton Van Zyl said.

A medical report showed the woman sustained injuries to both her eyes, her face, her right upper arm and her neck.

The victim was of small build, weighing only about 60 kg, while the accused was a “strapping young man and relatively tall and well built”.

According to the state’s original indictment it was alleged that Mazibuko raped the complainant several times. The first rape was alleged to have occurred after the victim partially lost consciousness during the assault in her garage.

He then allegedly drove to a farm in Mooi River and proceeded to rape her in various ways.

It was alleged the victim had at some point managed to send an SMS message summoning help and police arrived at the scene and arrested Mazibuko.
