Mooi River’s ‘green’ prize money not used

2014-09-29 00:00

THOUSANDS of rands in much-needed funds that could vastly improve the Mooi River municipal dump site sit idle, with the municipality crippled by incompetence.

Months after winning the Green Municipality competition that came with R100 000 prize money, the municipality has yet to claim that money from the provincial Department of Agriculture that ran the competition. The former management allegedly failed to draw up a business plan on how the money would be spent.

The money would be directed to the Mooi River Recycling Primary Co-operative, which is responsible for the recycling at the dump.

“We did all the green work, the municipality won that award because of us. When we won the award around May or June, the municipal manager called me and showed me the certificate and thereafter, nothing else,” said Sibusiso Dladla, chairperson of the co-operative.

“They were supposed to draw up a plan on how the money would be spent, but nothing happened. I recently received a call from the technical services manager. We will probably meet on Monday [today] about this,” said Dladla.

He said running the recycling scheme has not been easy because they receive no help, except from foreign donors.

“Recently, there was a fire. It damaged an electricity cable and we had to pay R13 000 for it and it damaged our stock worth R20 000,” he said.

DA councillor Ken Denysschen said: “It is no wonder that these types of initiatives fail and then the public at large say it’s because the co-ops lack the business acumen.”

Attempts to speak to Mooi River municipal manager Max Moyo were unsuccessful.
