Moor cup: PMB teams suffer heavy losses

2013-07-17 00:00

IT is that time of the year when injuries and player fatigue wear down the Pietermaritzburg premier club rugby teams and where a lack of depth comes back to bite.

Maritzburg Collegians and UKZN Impi had the unenviable task of travelling to Durban for Friday night meetings with the top two club first XVs in the province and both were beaten by big margins.

The brave Impi went down 71-7 to reigning champs College Rovers and the win all but

cemented Rovers as the 2013 Fidelity Security Moor Cup

Premier Division champions.

Rovers had a couple of Sharks lurking in their midst, including hooker Craig Burdon, and the loose forwards made hay with the quality ball they were able to secure.

Durban Collegians, who beat Maritzburg Collegians 72-6, have a game in hand over Rovers but are 13 log points behind and it would take a brave man to suggest Rovers won’t take the title yet again this year.

Rovers scored 11 tries while Durban Collegians got 12 against UKZN.

Meanwhile, First Division South leaders Amanzimtoti battled to an 18-6 win over Ballito Dolphins while Hillcrest beat Jaguars 24-14. Richards Bay outplayed UKZN Durban 35-3 and Westville beat South Coast Warriors 43-25.
