More money for comrades

There are 1,4 million reasons for the world’s elite ultra-marathoners to enter next year’s Comrades Marathon on Sunday, June 15.

In announcing the increased prize money that will see the winner earn R220 000, CMA general manager Gary Boschoff commented: “We live in a professional era and ultra-marathon stars deserve to be richly rewarded … Last year we saw the impact a runner like Leonid Shvetsov can have on our event and we need to keep that momentum going.’’

While the first prize has increased by 10% the total prize money, that is distributed to just under 100 competitors, has increased by over R160 000 (13%) compared with this year’s down run.

This is the first increase since 2005 and does not include the Gold Medals or statuettes awarded to the first South African man and woman, which were previously sponsored by Harmony.

Footwear and clothing sponsor Reebok will once again ensure that every entrant has something to commemorate their participation in the event, which has now adopted the strap line The Ultimate Human Race as their corporate identity for all future years.

In addition to the high technology Reebok Play Dry shirt provided in the registration goodie bag, those runners who finish in Reebok shoes will receive the added bonus of a jacket at the finish line.
