More rain: most dams filled to capacity

2012-11-05 00:00

IT seems the weekend’s sunshine and even heat — 31°C across much of KwaZulu-Natal yesterday — were just a brief respite from the cold and rainy weather and not the real start of summer.

There’s yet another cold front on the way, and by Wednesday temperatures will be below 20°C once more, Durban weather forecaster Wisani Maluleke said yesterday.

But the good news is that the rainy month we have just experienced has filled the dams managed by Umgeni Water, other than Midmar, to capacity already.

Said Shami Harichunder, Umgeni corporate stakeholder manager: “What this means in effect is that there is adequate water available to supply all six of Umgeni Water’s customers — eThekwini, Ilembe, Ugu, uMgungundlovu, Sisonke and Msunduzi — and there is no possibility of water restrictions in the near future.

This is good news for consumers, and the situation has been helped by good rainfalls over the past week.”

Harichunder said the situation would be assessed again at the end of the rainy season.
