More to a golfball than meets the eye

2009-11-11 00:00

ALL regular golfers will know the Titleist golf ball. It is generally accepted as the best ball on the planet and 72% of professional golfers use it. There is only a small range of Titleist balls and as with all top quality golf equipment it carries the top price.

The Acushnet company, which started producing rubber products in 1910, owns the Titleist brand along with Cobra and Foot-Joy. The main competitors of Titleist in the golf ball market are Callaway, Srixon and Nike.

The Titleist company is responsible for the improvement of the golf ball since the thirties. A mechanical golf-swing machine was developed with a consistent stroke, and used to test the variance of individual Titleist golf balls. This was coupled with a machine that could uniformly wind rubber string around a rubber core, made Titleist the market leaders.

The difficult part of the construction of the ball, in those days, was to position the core accurately in the centre of the ball. If it wasn’t in the middle, the ball would have a bias and to test this, Titleist used X-ray machines.

During World War 2, Acushnet shelved its golf business for several years, producing rubber gas masks and oxygen masks of which it was the world’s sole supplier.

When Acushnet returned to producing golf balls in 1945, the Titleist ball quickly became the most popular ball used by professionals.

The golf ball as we know it today is more durable and travels much further than those used in the past and is made of different materials.

The Acushnet Company decided that it should also have a cheaper ball priced to compete with the popular Top-Flite ball. They came up with the Pinnacle ball which is now the top-selling golf ball to amateurs and is the official ball of the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championships.

There are so many types of golf balls available that we as golfers are spoilt for choice these days.

From the 19th hole:

Our three favourite old golfers, Sam, Harry and Fred were sitting together after their weekly game of golf.

These are some of the things they were overheard saying to each other:

Sam said: “The noblest of dogs is the hot dog, because it feeds the hand that bites it.”

Harry said: “I told my doctor that I sometimes feel like a dog. He asked me how long have I have been feeling like that. I told him, ever since I was a puppy.”

Fred said: “I was in the dog box so often with my first wife that I had to get a divorce through the SPCA.”
