Morningside: Attacker stabs man, girlfriend in bed

2008-08-20 00:00

A Durban businessman was stabbed to death while sleeping in his Morningside flat yesterday.

Police spokesman Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said that 56-year-old Peter Heim was with his girlfriend when an unknown person entered their bedroom and attacked them.

It is believed that the woman had just returned from a local convenience store and got into bed when the attack occurred.

“During this attack, the victim was stabbed in the neck and his throat was slit. The woman was stabbed in the neck,” Mngomezulu said.

It is believed that a large kitchen knife was used in the attack.

Mngomezulu said the woman’s screams woke a neighbour, who saw the suspect flee through a kitchen window. There were no signs of a forced entry or that anything had been stolen from the flat.

ER 24 spokesman Derrick Banks said the woman was stabbed in the neck and head.

“The man was declared dead when paramedics arrived, while the woman was treated at the scene. It was a horrific scene,” he said.

Banks said the woman was extremely traumatised and was taken to a local hospital where she is reportedly in a stable condition.

Mngomezulu said the motive for the attack is unknown at this stage and no suspects have been arrested.

Police are investigating how the suspect entered the flat as the main gate can be opened only with a remote.
