Moses Mabhida kicks off titan clash

FANS who have applied for, and had their tickets approved, for the 2010 World Cup group stages match at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on June 25 would have been celebrating after last night’s Final Draw in Cape Town.

The game will be one of the highlights of the World Cup first round, pitting five-time world champions and football’s undoubted glamour team, Brazil, against 2006 semi-finalists and 2004 European championship finalists, Portugal.

The match will also see two of the biggest stars in soccer and Real Madrid team-mates, Kaka of Brazil and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, face off against each other.

While the other four group games in Durban are not as glamorous, they do involve star attractions Germany, Spain and the Netherlands, while the June 22 match between Nigeria and Korea Republic will see fans backing one of the potential African performers at the World Cup.

On June 13, three-time world champions Germany face a competitive Australia outfit in the first World Cup game to be held at Moses Mabhida.

On June 16, Vicente Del Bosque’s world’s No.1-ranked Spain, whose stars include strikers David Villa of Valencia and Liverpool’s Fernando Torres, Barcelona midfielder Xavi and Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, meet Switzerland in Durban.

In another intriguing match-up, the form team of the World Cup qualifers, the Netherlands, who were the first European team to qualify for 2010 with seven wins out of seven, face disciplined Japan on June 19 at Moses Mabhida.
