Most Beautiful Object in South Africa

2011-02-24 00:00

TWO stunning pieces of furniture, both of which were made in KwaZulu-Natal, have been shortlisted for the title of ‘Most Beautiful Object in South Africa’.

The Qalakabusha Couch, created by Caversham-based Ardmore Ceramic Art, forms part of the midlands arts organisation’s new design collection, which takes Ardmore’s distinctive creativity, wit and luxurious styling into a range of functional products.

The Dreams for Africa chair, created by Woza Moya, the craft arm of the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust (HACT), was made by 160 women from the Valley of a Thousand Hills and has been travelling around South Africa and abroad (most recently to New York City) to give people from all walks of life the chance to sit in it and share their dreams. Claudia Krumhoff, spokesperson for HACT, described the chair’s nomination as an honour, adding: “Can you imagine what it would mean to all the women who made the chair, ... if they won?”

To vote for the Ardmore couch send an SMS with the code MBOISA2 to 34180. SMSes cost R2. The code for the Dreams for Africa chair is MBOISA10. Correctly voting for the winner could win you a R10 000 shopping voucher at the Design Indaba Online Shop.

Winners will be announced at the end of the Design Indaba on February 27, and local residents are being asked to vote for their favourites before February 27.
