Mother admits she strangled her baby boy

A 29-YEAR-OLD woman admitted to a Pietermaritzburg magistrate yesterday that she had strangled her young child with her hands and then intended killing herself, but was disturbed before she could do so.

Nozipho Precious Maphanga, of Imbali, told magistrate Ashin Singh that she intended pleading guilty to the charge that she murdered her son, Owami Maphanga, who was 16 months old, at Willowfountain on Sunday.

Maphanga asked the court to appoint a legal aid attorney to represent her.

She was advised that she was not obliged to tell the court what happened on the day in question, but she chose to do so.

“I had a problem with my accommodation at home ... I was chased away from my home. I wanted to kill my baby and myself, but my elder child came and disturbed me after I killed the baby,” she said.
