Mother appalled by inept cops

2014-09-19 00:00

A NORTHDALE resident has criticised police over their alleged lack of effort in connection with an assault on her 10-year-old son.

The mother, whose name is being witheld for the protection of her son, said her child has been the victim of ongoing abuse and bullying by older boys in their area.

On Monday, the attackers allegedly assaulted the boy and tried to throw him down an open storm drain in Gandhi Road.

The mother said she contacted the police and was appalled by their apparent lack of concern.

“I called them at 5 pm and they arrived after 9 pm. They didn’t exit their vehicle, didn’t take a statement, wrote nothing down. They just advised me to go to the victim support at Mountain Rise,” she said.

She explained that she gave her statement to a policeman in the charge office at Mountain Rise the next day. Officers said that they would send someone before 9 am on Wednesday to take photos of her son and take his statement.

Instead they allegedly arrived at midday, and because her son was at school by then, undertook to come back in the evening.

“When they didn’t arrive that night, I phoned the police station, but they claimed to have no knowledge of what I’m speaking of. This is why people do not report crimes …” she said.

Her son had sustained bruises to his thighs and deep scrapes down across his legs.

The SAPS KZN Media Centre were asked to comment on the complaint, but instead asked The Witness to supply the details of the mother to them in order to investigate.
