Mother of all celebrations

2013-01-10 00:00

BUSLOADS of people from across the country are expected to flood Durban beaches and the inner city as the ANC gears up for the mother of all celebrations.

Secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said transportation for about 16 000 people has been arranged, using 1 120 buses, 670 taxis and eight trains.

“The main anniversary celebrations will be held at King’s Park Stadium and we expect full capacity of ANC members and supporters who will be ferried in their thousands to the stadiums,” he said.

The event is scheduled to start at 9 am on Saturday, and President Jacob Zuma is expected to present the party’s annual statement two hours later.

Mantashe said the statement — which spells out the party’s yearly goals — has been prepared, but first needs approval from the National Executive Committee (NEC).

He also hinted that high unemployment and other developmental challenges in the country may be addressed.

A cake celebrating the party’s 101 years will be cut and donated to an orphanage in kwaMashu and a senior citizens’ home in kwaDabeka in Durban.

Tomorrow, the NEC will hold its first meeting since the Mangaung elective conference.

In the evening, a fund-raising gala dinner will be held.

Tables will be sold, although Mantashe wouldn’t say at what price.

He, however, confirmed proceeds will go towards the running of the ANC.

Sihle Zikalala, ANC provincial secretary, said the provincial office will also be renamed.

This will begin with a parade from King Dinizulu Road (in Berea) to the provincial offices, where party leaders will unveil the new name.

Zikalala said plans for the big event on Saturday were well underway, and that weather checks had been done and showed that it will be partly cloudy.

Addressing security concerns after fears of assassination attempts at Mangaung, Mantashe said facilities would be made available to protect people and that stringent measures would be put in place.
