Mother of two wins R15?000 salary for 6 years

2010-01-30 00:00

MOOI River resident Laura Meyer never thought that a R2 SMS would win her a R15 000 salary for six years.

Meyer, who works at the Middlefields Stud Farm in Mooi River, entered the East Coast Radio’s Savannah Retrench Yourself competition, where she had to perform a series of hilarious office tasks to make it to the finals.

Listeners had to vote for the best contestant, who would then compete against finalists from around the country.

Meyer had to talk on radio with a Russian accent, collect picture ideas for the radio station’s website and even organise a Christmas party.

“We had a Santa’s workshop theme. I had a great time putting the party together.

“I got the grooms at the stables and my family involved too,” said Meyer.

Pictures of the party, showing horses wearing Santa hats, were posted on the website. Meyer also embarked upon a campaign to canvass votes. “I posted a message on Facebook and even got a billboard in Mooi River so people could vote for me.”

After Meyer was named a finalist, she and her husband, Bryant, were whisked off to Cape Town for the grand finale.

“There were five finalists. At the draw, we were asked to scratch a board to find out if we had won. I was so busy looking for the R15 000 marker that I did not realise that I had scratched the winning board,” she said.

Meyer, who is building a home in Mooi River, said she will continue working at the stud farm and will invest the money in her home and her daughters, Jessica and Sara-Leigh’s education.
