Mother still seeks justice after son stabbed and killed

2014-12-22 00:00

AN Eastwood mother is still battling to pick up the pieces after her son was stabbed to death last December. And with the investigation into the case seemingly grinding to a halt, the family fears Myron Fortuin’s murder will never be solved.

His mother, Mary Fortuin, said she had little faith that justice would be served. “It is officially one year since my son was brutally murdered in Eastwood. The boys who murdered my son are walking free while I still mourn his death.”

According to the family, Myron was brutally attacked on December 19. He died the next day in hospital after suffering severe head injuries and broken bones. Fortuin was knocked over by a car, and the driver allegedly reversed and drove over him before a group of men jumped out, banging his head and body on the roadway.

Mary said that her daughter, who wished to remain anonymous, recognised the accused men from the scene after they drove past in their car.

The family claimed the men handed themselves over to the police and appeared in court, but were released by the court “because the docket was empty”.

Acting station commander Colonel Pregasen Pillay confirmed the arrest and their appearance in court, but denied the allegation of the empty docket.

He said: “It is untrue that the suspects were released due to the docket being empty but were released by the court. The case is being investigated by Lieutenant Makhathini, who’s been in contact with the complainant regarding the case.”

Pillay said the matter is sub judice and due to the sensitivity of the investigation, they cannot release any further details.

Constable Skhumbuzo Ngcobo said the police conducted an ID parade, but the witness was unable to make a positive identification.
