Motive a mystery: Taxi boss killed in ambush

2013-04-17 00:00

THE family of taxi boss and former uThukela District Municipality disaster manager Zwangaye Sithole remain puzzled by the motive for his murder.

Sithole was shot and killed at Mhlumayo, near Ladysmith, on Friday afternoon.

Sithole, who was preparing to marry his fiancée, Thanda Mthethwa, was on his way home when he was gunned down.

He had given a lift to three men — Mashesha Duma, Bra Khumalo and a relative, Mbekezeli Sithole.

Mbekezeli, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle, said gunshots rang from “out of nowhere”. Khumalo and Duma are in hospital, but no details on the extent of their injuries were made available.

“We only heard gunshots and the car crashed at the side of the road. I was not sure of what was happening,” said Mbekezeli.

“I was scared. Uncle [Sithole] alighted from the vehicle, took a few steps and fell to the ground.

“Immediately after that I heard some men shouting ‘finish him, don’t run away, take that gun as well’,” Mbekezeli told The Witness yesterday. He said he still can’t figure out the motive for the attack.

Sithole’s cousin, Henry Hlatshwayo, said Sithole had nine minibus taxis and that his dream was to see his children getting a better education. “He was a person of peace.”

Ezakheni police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder, and no arrest has been made at this stage.
