Motlanthe: Nothing wrong with braai

2012-09-24 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe says he sees nothing wrong with braaiing on Heritage Day, especially if citizens give some thought to the country’s past while turning the wors.

He was asked by an audience member at the Oscar Mpetha memorial lecture in Stellenbosch on Thursday whether he thought the marketing of Heritage Day as national braai day undermined or cheapened the occasion.

The question followed critical comments from some in the ANC in recent years that citizens should take the day more seriously, for example by attending official rallies.

Motlanthe said it was not an issue to fight over, especially as history could go with braais.

“It’s part of the journey to a better community life. Those that understand the past should explain to others how the one doesn’t exclude the other.”
