Motorist rescues puppies from uncertain fate on N3

Thanks to a Good Samaritan, the lives of two traumatised cross-bred puppies have been spared after they were waved around by an unknown man on the side of the freeway on Saturday.

Pauline Marais said she was driving on the N3 from Kloof to Pietermaritzburg when she noticed a man standing on the side of the road holding three puppies up and waving them around as if to attract the attention of passing motorists.

"One of the puppies managed to get away from him and ran into the traffic and was killed. At the sight of this, I was so deeply shaken that I decided to stop so that I could help the remaining two," she said.

Marais said that as she stopped, a vehicle that she believes was from the Road Traffic Inspectorate pulled up behind her and a man came to help her rescue the two puppies.

Marais said that when the puppies were rescued, they were starving, thirsty and a bit disorientated.

"They were sort of lifeless and as soon as I put them inside my car, they just collapsed," she said.

Marais said she could not find out how the man got there or what he was planning to do with the puppies as he did not speak any English.

"I am very grateful to the man who came over to assist me because I was really not sure what to do. I’m happy that I managed to get the puppies to the SPCA where I knew they would be safe," she said.

SPCA spokeswoman Maureen Vida thanked both Marais and the man who stopped to lend a helping hand.

"Not many people would do that and we are really happy to know that there are still people who care that much about the wellbeing of animals," she said.
