Motorist seriously hurt as car smashes into showroom

2013-01-15 00:00

A MAN is in a serious condition after losing control of his car at the corner of Boshoff Street and Victoria Road, and crashing into Metro Car Sales on Sunday evening.

Three cars were damaged in the crash and one of the cars, valued at R289 995, has been written off.

Elvis Naidoo, sales manager at Metro Car Sales, told The Witness the dealer’s insurance was assessing the damage.

Naidoo said the main cause of crashes like this one was that people drove too fast over the bridge and didn’t realise that there were traffic lights at the next intersection.

“And then it becomes too late to stop,” he added.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said they found the driver trapped inside the car.

He had suspected neck and back injuries, multiple cuts and abrasions and a suspected head injury.

He said the fire department used rescue equipment to take the man out of the car.

He was stabilised and taken to Medi-Clinic hospital.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said a case of reckless and negligent driving had been opened.

This was not the first vehicle to crash into the car showroom.

In 2011, an SA Roadlink bus crashed into the showroom and caused damage estimated at more than R2 million.

The managing director of Metro Car Sales, Baboo Essa, said SA Roadlink had still not responded to its claim.

“Every time we call them they say they are waiting for this or that. We are thinking of dragging them to court,” Essa told The Witness.

Moshwane Joe, SA Roadlink chief operations officer, said he could recall the details of the accident, but was not aware of any discussions about payment.
