Mountain Rise: crash kills one

ONE person was killed in a crash in Manning Road near Mountain Rise on New Year’s eve, adding to rise in number of deaths on KZN roads.

It was still unclear what caused the head-on collision between two light motor vehicles late on Monday night.

ER24’s Derrick Banks said paramedics arrived on the scene and found the two vehicles with extensive damage.

Two occupants were trapped inside the one vehicle. The Jaws of Life had to be used.

In another incident, a woman pedestrian was killed in a hit and run accident in Gladys Manzi (Murray) Road.

In total, 175 people have died over the festive season in 166 accidents in KZN.

A further 1 045 people have been arrested for drunk driving, more than 3 000 for driving without a licence and at least 166 fined for various transgressions.

Nationally, road deaths have risen to more than 1 200.
