Mountain awareness day

2011-11-30 00:00

MOUNTAIN biking, a San rock art walk, rock climbing, a slack line and swimming are some of the activities to take place during International Mountain Day celebrations at Cobham in the Drakensberg this weekend.

The KZN section of the Mountain Club of South Africa said this year’s focus is on mountains and forests and their role in a “green economy” and in climate change adaptation measures.

Cyndi Jonker said, “Healthy mountain forests are crucial to the ecological health of the world.

“Apart from sustaining numerous wildlife species, they most importantly protect watersheds that supply freshwater to more than half the world’s people.”

Participants must bring their own camping equipment and food or reserve a spot at the Pholela Hut through Ezemvelo.

There will be a social braai on Saturday evening.
