Mountain climb

2008-04-17 00:00

NOTABLE feats of physical endurance make the headlines. Bulwer Mountain is probably the highest point in the midlands, but getting to the top of it is not necessarily newsworthy. However, when the climber is an 88-year-old man repeating an ascent which he first made as an eight-year-old boy, 80 years ago, taking his eight-year-old great-grandson with him, it becomes an achievement worthy of note.

Not only does the incident have an appealing symmetry about it, but it is a tribute to generational continuity and family values. And Jack Long’s climb is certainly a feat far beyond the powers of virtually all other 88-year-olds. Congratulations to both climbers — and may Brandon Linnett be able to follow in his great-grandfather’s footsteps in 80 years’ time.
