Mpophomeni tourism gets huge boost

2010-09-17 00:00

THE site for the Mpophomeni Tourism Gateway Information and Craft Centre was handed over to the contractor yesterday at an on-site function.

This is the latest development in the growth of the Zulu Mpophomeni Tourism Enterprise (ZMTE), an award-winning community tourism project which runs tours of the township and supports several successful bed-and-breakfast operations. The gateway building, sited on the turn-off from the R617, the main tourism route to the southern Drakensberg, will house an information centre and provide a home for local crafters.

“It will be easy to attract visitors to make a stop for relaxation and also get a feel of what ZMTE has to offer,” said Neli Sibiya, ZMTE chairperson. “It will serve as a gateway to Mpophomeni, to the surrounding areas and other attractions in the province.”

Sibaya said that during the construction phase there would be direct employment of around 100 people and indirect employment of 40 others. “Post-construction we have planned for 12 permanent jobs and roughly 30 part-time jobs.”

The main funding for the venture comprises five million rand from the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and three million rand from the National Lottery.

The contractor is Mpume Msomi of Zethembe Maintenance. Project manager Sifiso Ndlovu of Excellence at Work Consultants said construction will start in the first week of October and be completed in six months.
