Mpumalanga: Mchunu threatens freeze on taxis to stop ‘the madness’

2011-12-12 00:00

TRANSPORT MEC Willies Mchunu will approach the cabinet tomorrow for approval to shut down all taxi operations in the town of Mpumalanga until the conflict between opposing factions in the area is resolved.

Mchunu’s spokesperson, Kwanele Ncalane, said in a statement yesterday that Mchunu addressed a meeting of Mpumalanga taxi operators and community members at the Mpumalanga sports ground on Saturday where he issued the warning.

Mchunu said he will not allow anarchy to become the order of the day and that if those involved cannot resolve the problems, the department will do it for them and they will not like the solutions.

Ncalane said the meeting was convened by the department to engage the community on “drastic measures” the government intends taking to bring stability to the Mpumalanga Taxi Association.

These included seeking the approval of cabinet to close down the taxi operations in Mpumalanga until the unrest is resolved, calling for specialised police units to patrol the area, and if that fails to enlist the help of the SA National Defence Force.

“We cannot let this madness go on,” the MEC said.

Last week 67 taxi owners, drivers, passengers and others appeared in the Hammarsdale Magistrate’s Court charged with public violence after being arrested at the Mpumalanga taxi rank.
