Mr Gay World: Local man to represent Africa

2008-12-28 00:00

Mr Gay KZN is set to represent the African continent in the Mr Gay World pageant in Canada this February.

Pietermaritzburg local Andrew Venter is scheduled to take part in the four-day pageant starting on February 1.

“I am so thrilled and excited and looking forward to the challenge,” said Venter. “I am proud to participate and will do my best to represent our country and Africa.”

Venter and Johannesburg finalist Christian de Jager are the African representatives as South Africa is the only country on the continent where homosexuality is legal.

Director of the Gay & Lesbian Network, Anthony Waldhausen, said: “Andrew will be an ambassador for Africa but [also] for the network … We are proud of him and wish him all the best.”

Venter will face a series of athletic tests and extensive interviews with the panel of judges at the pageant.

Organisers are applying to Home Affairs for a temporary passport so that he can attend the event. However, Venter needs the help of the community to cover his travel, food and pageant costs — which will amount to around R50 000.

“I would like to appeal to the people of KZN and South Africa to support me in raising the funds,” he said. “I myself will endeavour to assist with the fundraising and will be approaching family and friends to support me.”
