Mr Price competition: calling all wannabe fashion designers

2011-03-24 00:00

ARE you a new designer who has what it takes to be crowned with the Mr Price New Designer Award?

The 031 Collection presented by Mr Price is hosting the first of its inaugural fashion awards. It is calling on up-and-coming designers between 18 and 26 years old, either studying fashion full-time or in final year or, better yet, have a diploma in fashion, to take part in the competition that could set them up in the fashion industry.

What is required from the designers is a storyboard featuring six outfits, and the entries must include garment illustration and mood direction with detailed technical drawings as well as a written motivation.

The show will also display the work of established talents such as Terrence Bray, Holmes Brothers, Leigh Schubert, Nguni Shade and Amanda Laird Cherry to name a few.

The competition closes on April 4, after which the judges will announce the names of the finalists.

The winner stands a chance to receive over-the-top prizes, R20 000 cash price towards their career, an internship with Mr Price and the opportunity to design a range to be sold in select Mr Price stores.

“To be successful in the current economic climate, designers need to consider their designs from more than just an aesthetic angle,” said Louise Holmes, marketing director of Mr Price.

Mr Price will provide interns with an opportunity to see beyond the design — from manufacturing to marketing and even visual merchandising. “They will see their designs transformed into actual garments that will be sold in our stores,” said Holmes.

The show will take place on May 19, 20 and 21 in Durban and tickets will be sold for R170 at the Computicket.
