Msunduzi: Nkosi rumour denied

2012-08-27 00:00

ANC regional executive committee (REC) chairperson Alpha Shelembe has scotched rumours that there are moves afoot within the ANC to remove Msunduzi municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi.

Shelembe said there had never been a meeting among ANC structures where anything of the sort had been discussed, so he could not understand where the rumours emanated from.

He said the REC and the ANC as a whole had been happy with the progress being made at Msunduzi. From the reports the REC had received, there were no indications from both political and administrative structures within the municipality that there was any unhappiness with the municipal manager.

Nkosi said no one had approached him and asked him to resign, nor indicated that he would be put on special leave. “I know nothing about all of this,” he said.

Three Witness journalists heard from different sources in the past week that Nkosi would be asked to resign by the ANC or could be put on special leave until his contract ends in December.

The journalists were told that he had angered the unions and some senior staff by his “heavy-handed” management style. There was also talk that he had irritated residents with his uncompromising stance on revenue collection and there was a sense that he was alienating residents.

A source within the municipality, who has worked there for a long time, said that when rumours like this started going viral, it was clear that there was a lobby at work wanting the municipal manager out. Everything he did would come under scrutiny.
