Msunduzi load shedding plan

2007-12-12 00:00

MSUNDUZI Electricity has prepared a time dependent load-shedding programme throughout the city to minimise harm to business and residents.

Depending on when Eskom requests capacity, specific blocks will be switched off. Should Eskom request more than 10MVA, two blocks may be switched off at a time.

Phil Mashoko, Msunduzi strategic executive manager for infrastructure, services and facilities, said that so as to not inconvenience customers at the same time every day, different programmes will apply on alternate days.

He said Eskom contacted them yesterday requesting 10MVA and later on in the day wanted an another 10MVA. Mashoko said they had to switch off power in College Road, Langalibalele Street and some parts of Church Street.

Asked what tomorrow will look like, Mashoko said he was uncertain.

“The problem is that even Eskom doesn’t know how much power they are going to require from us; it depends on their capacity. Hence, we have decided to prepare this programme. It looks like load shedding will continue today … ,” he said.

Mashoko said the programme will make 10MVA available to Eskom.

“The outages are expected to last for approximately two hours … As the balance between supply and demand is difficult to predict, it is not possible to notify customers … ”

Responding to yesterday’s outages, Msunduzi Traffic Department acting Senior Superintendent Bheki Xulu said quite a number of robots were off, but everything was under control.
