Msunduzi losing battle against illegal dumping

2013-05-27 00:00

MSUNDUZI municipality appears to be losing the battle against illegal dumping, much to the frustration of resident Lee-Ann Todd.

She spent months trying to get the municipality to clear up an illegal dumping site next to her driveway on the old Wartburg Road.

Barely a month after it was cleared there is the beginnings of another small dump, which like the last time is already showing signs of growing into an enormous heap.

Todd had suggested to the municipality that they place a skip in the area to stop the dumping.

She was told by the waste management unit that this will not be done as a skip in a public place will cause other illegal dumping. The unit said a root cause of the problem was non- or poor-collection of refuse and this will be attended to.

Todd says this has clearly not been addressed.

But, it is not just thumbs down to the municipality, it is thumbs down to residents as well who dump with impunity.

THE city’s new valuation roll is finally getting off the ground.

The roll was supposed to be ready by July next year, but the municipality received permission from the KZN Department of Co-operative Governance to complete the process by September/October.

Here’s hoping that this time around the process is not as chaotic as the previous exercise, over four years ago. Residents, who had appealed against the incorrect valuations of their properties, were further infuriated when their appeal forms were lost. Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi believes the process will go smoothly, “if we do it properly”. Witness Warriors will keep tabs on the process.
