Msunduzi on track for metro status, says IEC

PIETERMARITZBURG is a step closer to metro status, despite initial hiccups.

This was confirmed yesterday when Mawethu Mosery of the provincial Independent Electoral Commission told Exco that the city’s population density and growth mean that it fulfils metro status criteria.

There were concerns about the status after word got around that the KZN MEC for Co-operative Governance did not meet the July 30 deadline to gazette the city’s status change.

However, Mosery assured Exco that Msunduzi will be one of three new metro municipalities.

Mosery said the metro status means that ward boundaries will change and could include up to 20 additional wards.

“If we have an increase of 20 wards it means there will be 40 new councillors. This is the intended impact of the voter registration figures,” he said.

Mosery said people in certain areas may have to re-register.

Msunduzi cannot implement its metro status until councillors have served their full term, which will end in 2011.
