Msunduzi plans to create two additional wards

2015-03-24 00:00

THE Msunduzi Municipality plans to increase its 37 wards, by adding another two after August.

Two additional wards will be created — ward 38 in the northern suburbs and ward 39 in Vulindlela.

The municipality has the option of creating four more wards.

National Minister for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) had announced that Msunduzi was eligible to have up to a maximum of six additional wards so extra councilolors could serve residents.

Ward 38 will include parts of Thembalihle, Bishopstowe and parts of Ashburton.

Ward 39 will include parts of Vulindlela such as Songozima, Hemu-Hemu, Ekhokhwane Primary and parts of Incwadi, which is between 10 and 15 kilometres away from Vulindlela.

The IFP raised concerns about ward 39, saying it could create potential traditional leadership and service delivery problems.

The party’s chief whip Thinasonke Ntombela said: “The way this is divided means areas under one traditional authority will now fall into another traditional authority and that could create problems.

“If this is accepted, depending on the voting patterns, it means someone who lives in Vulindlela may have to be serviced by a councillor who lives in Incwadi,” he said.

The proposal has to go to the demarcation board for approval and then public consultation and the process could only be finalised by the end of the year.
