Msunduzi procurement officials suspended

2011-04-07 00:00

THREE officials in the procurement section of the Msunduzi Municipality face being suspended following revelations of allegations of misconduct on matters relating to the supply chain in the municipality.

Msunduzi spokesperson Brian Zuma confirmed yesterday that the municipality sent letters of intention to suspend to acting procurement manager Rakesh Singh, tender documents manager Thavandree Gounder and contract specifications officer Tyrone Ashby on Tuesday.

Zuma said the decision was based on “allegations pertaining to supply chain management”.

Zuma would not be drawn into giving details on the allegations as the three officials were expected to appear yesterday before the council’s disciplinary hearing committee to submit reasons why they should not be suspended.

Singh, the most senior of the three, took over the department in an acting capacity after procurement manager Francis Grantham was suspended last year following the deployment of the provincial intervention task team (PIT).

Singh declined to comment when The Witness contacted him yesterday.

He said acting municipal manager Thokozani Maseko was still talking to them about the intent of their suspension.

The move follows hot on the heels of the suspension of the council’s credit control manager Ajay Beharie last month on allegations of fraud and corruption.

Beharie was alleged to have conducted irregular write-offs of rates and service charges.
