Msunduzi: staff will pay from own pocket for irregular orders

2010-12-10 00:00

MSUNDUZI staff who order goods and services on behalf of the municipality without following proper procurement processes can expect to have to pay the bills from their own pockets.

This was the stringent warning issued by intervention team member Ben Dorfling during yesterday’s executive committee meeting.

Dorfling said this issue of irregular procurements has become a huge problem for the municipality and the time has come to put a stop to it.

He said letters are being sent to all service providers informing them that if they receive requests from municipal staff without a proper order form, they deliver or supply at their own risk and the municipality will not be liable. “Even if it’s the smallest quotation,” said Dorfling.

He added that “Operation Pitbull”, launched to bring an en d to illegal electricity connections, has been a resounding success and has netted the municipality R35 million in a few months.

However, Dorfling said the municipality’s debtors have increased slightly and it will have to address that before it spirals out of control.

Democratic Alliance caucus whip Rodger Ashe asked about suspended managers who are still drawing “enormous salaries” for sitting at home.

Dorfling responded that the council cannot intervene and must let the disciplinary process run its course.
