Msunduzi to have development commission to craft city’s future

2013-06-21 00:00

MSUNDUZI will have its own City Development Commission (CDC) linked to the provincial and the National Development Plan (NDP).

The Executive Committee (Exco) yesterday gave municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi the go-ahead to sign an agreement with the South African Cities Network to assist in the process.

Nkosi said the network would help in the drafting of a city development strategy that would lead to the setting up of a CDC.

The network had just completed helping Mangaung set up its strategy and was willing to assist Msunduzi.

According to Nkosi, the South African Cities Network is made up of eight cities including all the metros.

Msunduzi is a member and Nkosi is confident that the organisation has the necessary expertise and experience to put in place a development strategy for the provincial capital.

The CDC will then be guided by this strategy when it begins crafting the city’s vision for the next 30 years.

The CDC would be made up of local experts.

Mayor Chris Ndlela welcomed the initiative and said the city was fortunate to have four major institutions of higher learning — Varsity College, uMgungundlovu FET, Durban University of Technology (DUT) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

These were untapped resources that could be better utilised by council, he said. “Having a city development commission will be an opportunity to get all these institutions actively involved in planning for the future of the city,” Ndlela said.
