Mt Phoenix finally scuppered after seven weeks

2011-09-09 00:00

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) finally scuppered the 164 metre oil tanker, MT Phoenix, in the Indian Ocean on Tuesday. The KwaZulu-Natal High Court granted Samsa an order to detain, seize and sell the vessel on July 22. The tanker was en route to India from West Africa to be scrapped when it suffered engine trouble with a 15-man crew on board. The Durban-based ocean-going tug, Smit Amandla, which is on contract to the National Department of Transport, towed the tanker to sea where it lay at anchor while Samsa tried to correspond with the uninsured owners. On July 25 the Phoenix started dragging her anchor in rough seas while the crew somehow failed to catch eight rocket lines fired from the tug. Six of the lines were found on the Phoenix after she ran aground at Sheffield beach on July 26.
