Much ado about nothing

According to the blurb for this handsome hardback volume, it aims to show women who are faced with problems from divorce to depression, menopause to marriage, and infidelity to insomnia, that someone else has been there, and has expressed your situation better than you could do yourself. The subtitle is “The Literary Survival Guide for Women”.

It’s a good idea, but in reality it’s a bit of a disappointment. There’s altogether too many of the problems the authors have faced, and not enough of what other writers have said about it all. And while the writers moan (quite rightly in my view) about the avalanche of self-help books on the market, there are moments when their book manages to sound like just another of them. Still, it’s entertaining enough to dip into, although it is a bit indigestible to try to read much at one sitting. The title, of course, comes from Shakespeare’s “Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more” (Much Ado About Nothing). More of that kind of thing and a bit less of Jeffries and Warman would have helped.
