Mugging victim rides to Parliament on MP’s car bonnet

2008-08-26 00:00

Cape Town — In a desperate attempt to escape his attackers, a man jumped on to the vehicle of Freedom Front Plus MP Willie Spies yesterday — and was driven to Parliament lying on the bonnet of Spies’s car.

Spies was on his way from the airport to the city on the N2 when Francisco Peterson (27) jumped on to the bonnet of his Mercedes Benz.

Peterson, a cellphone repair man, said he had been attacked by three men.

“They took eight cellphones from me.

“When I refused to give them the remaining two, they began beating me with a wooden pole.”

Peterson fled towards the highway with one of the attackers hot on his heels, and then jumped in front of Spies’s car.

Spies was driving quite slowly because there was a stationary vehicle in the middle of the road.

He braked when Peterson jumped in front of his car.

Peterson jumped on to the bonnet and held on.

Spies said Peterson’s eyes were begging for help.

“I accelerated and stopped about 500 metres further down the road.

“When I stopped, he rearranged how he was sitting on the bonnet and then I drove at about 40 or 50 km/h into town.”

Spies pulled over to ask if everything was alright, but Peterson asked him to keep driving.

Spies phoned his office at Parliament to call an ambulance and to inform the police at the entrance to the buildings of the passenger on his bonnet.

Peterson, whose face was covered in blood, was quite calm on his arrival at Parliament, but worried about what would happen to the two cellphones he still had when he was admitted to hospital.

A cut above Peterson’s left eye bled profusely and he struggled to speak.

He was admitted to a local hospital.
