Mum refused surgery dies

2011-08-18 00:00

A DISTRAUGHT husband whose wife died at Northdale on Tuesday told The Witness,“I begged the doctors to operate on my wife but they didn’t. They said everything was fine.”

In an interview yesterday Vincent Ngidi (37) of Sweetwaters said he really does not know what to do. His wife, Thulisile Nene (38), died at Northdale Hospital after suffering from severe abdominal pains after carrying a dead foetus for two weeks.

Early in August Nene went to her general practitioner for a sonar scan and the doctor told her that the baby was not breathing.

He referred her to Northdale Hospital. When she arrived at the hospital the doctors scanned her and confirmed that the seven-month-old baby boy was dead.

Ngidi said his wife of two years was simply given pills, and when he begged the doctors to operate or transfer her to Grey’s Hospital, they refused and told him that no other hospital would admit her.

He said the doctors wanted her to deliver the deceased baby herself.

“I used to visit her every day and she’d tell me gory stories of the pains she endured. She told me that at night the agony used to be worse because there were no doctors to attend to her.”

Nene’s colleague, who declined to be named, said, “There is no excuse that they couldn’t perform a caesarian procedure to remove the baby. It’s said that the doctor who was treating her didn’t show any remorse whatsoever.”

Justice and Women (JAW) advocacy co-ordinator Amber Howard-Cornelius said Nene’s death is not an isolated incident — it happens all the time. The organisation has vowed to pursue this case.

Nene is survived by a 16-year-old son.
